The South Carolina Council for the Social Studies, in conjunction with the University of South Carolina, the Anne Frank House of Amsterdam, Netherlands, the Anne Frank Center of New York, NY, the South Carolina Council for the Social Studies,
Jewish Heritage Collection at the College of Charleston Addlestone Library,
and the South Carolina Council on the Holocaust is sponsoring professional development aligned with Common Core. The
Anne Frank House staff has taught students about Anne Frank and the Holocaust at 3000 sites in 90 countries over the last three decades; their powerful and innovative approaches to education can not only enrich instruction about Anne Frank and the Holocaust, they are applicable to many other subjects as well.
South Carolina has been selected as one of three regions in the United States for a special traveling exhibit,
Anne Frank- A History for Today
. South Carolina also seeks to develop master trainers who can support the exhibit around the state.
Registration includes lunch on Friday and Saturday.

Best Educational Photo
An introduction to the Anne Frank Exhibition through about 10 selected photos. The teachers first select – as individuals - the two photos they think would be the most educational with their students. Then they work in small groups and as a group select 2. Each group presents the two photos they chose. This can be done by making a poster or by simply presenting them. Feedback is given by trainer(s).

Where do human rights clash? We will select 2-3 films that relate to the Holocaust (so Mein Kampf, Neo-Nazis, etc.). We will have them practice a few simple debate methodologies.

Teachers work in small groups on lesson plans they could use with their students, building on insights from training

Objective of Activity
To provide participants with an expanded knowledge of instructional strategies to teach the Holocaust through Anne Frank. Activities are related to the Common Core State Standards Initiative, the National Council for the Social Studies
College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards
, the 2011 South Carolina Social Studies Academic Standards, and the 2008 English Language Arts Academic Standards.

This Renewal Credit Plan is district-based, only educators employed full-time in a district will be eligible for renewal credit.
Districts may elect to accept or reject this activity for recertification credit.
