Sometimes It Is Worth The Effort To Miss School

This morning, I felt like I was behind from the moment the alarm went off. I had missed two days of school last week to attend the Annual National Conference of Social Studies Conference in Washington, D.C., and now as I entered my classroom, I questioned if the days were worth what I had gained. The answer is a resounding "YES"!

As my students settled in this morning, I started the class discussing the two tours I had taken while at the conference. The first was to Lincoln's Cottage where he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation and the second was to the National Archives.

Lincoln's Cottage is a small, sparsely decorated home located on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home. Lincoln used the cottage as an escape from the craziness of the time. He visited the wounded soldiers (it was a hospital during the Civil War), spent time resting with his wife and sons, and wrote parts of the Emancipation Proclamation on small scraps of paper that were collected by William Slave to be placed in Lincoln's desk drawer for further review the next day. This idea of Lincoln needing a respite from his daily life and his interactions with so many people closely involved in the war gave me a deeper understanding of the background of this beloved president. It also allowed me to discuss the Emancipation Proclamation from a different angle today in class. I felt like I had firsthand knowledge of the document that I have taught annually for the last dozen years for the first time. My two hours on site made me a better teacher today.

The National Archives are well-known from the movie National Treasure as it is the scene where the Declaration of Independence is stolen. The building itself houses several interactive exhibits as well as the Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. The Declaration always makes me a little teary-eyed. The fact that these men were willing to give up their lives, their freedom, and their sacred honors to give us the opportunity to be free. The Declaration itself is incredibly faded. However, four words are still clearly visible - "free and independent states". This is the heart of America. We are free and independent states. I love that! I had a nice discussion about those words with my students today. The Archives currently have an exhibit called "A More Perfect Union". In it, the curators have amassed several interactive stations where visitors can investigate important court cases, moments in history, and lesser known individuals. The exhibit gave me ideas of court cases to pair up for a stronger APUSH review for my students. It also made me think and remember and focus on why I love what I do so much. This visit also made me a better teacher today because students learn better when you make things come alive which is so much easier when you remember that you LOVE this subject!

So, you missed your shot at NCSS for this year. However, you still have a wonderful opportunity to be reminded of why you do what you do and become an even better teacher by attending the rescheduled SCCSS conference in Columbia on February 20th (reception), 21st (Conference), and 22nd (awards breakfast & breakout sessions). The conference will be a wonderful professional development opportunity. You don't want to miss out!

Registration is open. If you had already registered before the Hurricane forced a reschedule, you do not need to register again. However, you will need to book your room at the Columbia Marriott.

I look forward to seeing you in February! What you gain by attending will be worth the sub plans. :)

Medal of Honor Essay Challenge

For many young people, heroes take the form of athletes, people with wealth or power, or sadly, criminals with status. Recipients of the Medal of Honor are true heroes and their stories need to be known, appreciated, shared and told by our nation’s youth. The CHALLENGE concept was inspired by our recognition of the need to educate our nation’s youth on the true meaning of a hero and also after attending the Medal of Honor Bowl, 2015, noting the presence at the game of living recipients, each with a story to share.

In 2012, the news media began addressing the crisis of poor writing in America. Some of the reasons that students note is a lack of connection to what they are asked to write as well as a lack of understanding of how to write. Therefore, the CHALLENGE presents an essay challenge that requires the research, writing and reporting of the details for the events/s for Medal of Honor Recipients. The CHALLENGE believes that students will appreciate the opportunity to write on a hero of their own choice and grow as writers in the process. Because the challenge includes national distribution to schools, the CHALLENGE will provide detailed instructions that mimic writing proficiency guidelines for standardized testing, plus the writing curriculum found in the A Backpack Journalist, which we will donate to support the challenge.

All CHALLENGE essays will be reviewed by our staff teachers and qualified volunteers, with the winning compositions assembled in a BOOK that will be published and released for sale at the Medal of Honor Bowl in 2016.

The value of this CHALLENGE and BOOK provide a vehicle for the Medal of Honor Bowl to provide an educational value to their mission and support the Medal of Honor Society.

In the low country of South Carolina we will be also be found as an “in-school” program, while distributing information to 27 states via the Youth Challenge Foundation, the Future Farmers of America Organization. DODEA Schools and various military associations. We are also connecting with public affairs within each military branch, and the Pentagon Channel and DINFOS. Our distribution to schools across the United States is through the US Department of Education, with the support of our Senatorial offices.

Essay Youth Challenge http://www.mohbowl.com/challenge/

During this highly engaging, Essay Youth Challenge, students will research and learn about the true American Hero: The Medal of Honor Recipient. Each youth will prepare an essay with their research results in either written form or a short movie presentation. The short movie presentation may include the use of the IPAD or other video format, but must be performed by the author of the essay. The presenter may also use props and dress to help deliver their presentation.

The CHALLENGE content will access (www.cmohs.org) and other multiple websites that are designed to support the research required. The CHALLENGE will take into consideration Differentiated Learning Styles, supported by scholastic journalism lesson plans by A Backpack Journalist. Basics on how to research, and then write interview questions, letters and short essays on the subject matter are included also. A Backpack Journalist is donating the basic writing and interviewing guidelines and lesson plans. Movie production guidelines focus on the use of the IPAD and IMOVIE.

Teaching American History webinars!

TAH.org and NCSS have partnered to provide a series of three webinars concerning the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and the change in the Constitution that they represented and did not represent. We will seek to understand these amendments within the Constitution’s basic structure to see how they fix problems endemic to the Constitution, while also understanding these amendments in their immediate context as vehicles to bring peace and protection for freedmen at the end of the Civil War. We will look at the layers of context and the immediate effects of these amendments-and also why they failed to secure their goals in the years immediately following the Civil War.

Even though you may have missed the first webinar this past Tuesday there's still time to register for the remaining two installments now.

Tuesday, July 14: Completing the Constitution with the 14th Amendment
This webinar focuses on how states would be re-integrated into the Union in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War and the powers Congress assumed in that extraordinary time. The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in all states of the Union, holding states to consistent standards for free labor and giving enforcement of this provision to the national Congress. Yet problems arose about the unequal treatment of freedmen after the war ended, giving rise to the need for a more radical limit on state power if the Union’s goals in the Civil War were to be accomplished.

Tuesday, July 21: The 15th Amendment and the Failure of Reconstruction
Reconstruction presents a dual-edged dilemma, as Republicans tried to re-integrate the Southerners back into the Union while providing protection for freedmen. The easier the terms of re-integration for the Southerners, the more difficult it would be to secure rights for the freedmen. The formula Republicans hit upon was to secure freedmen through the vote, so that they could, in effect, protect themselves. This strategy, adopted by the Grant Administration, required a huge effort on behalf of the Union army and law enforcement and was ultimately abandoned as requiring too much of an abridgment on Southern self-government.

Time: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm ET / 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm PT

Presenter: Scott Yenor, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Political Science, Boise State University, Idaho; partner faculty member, Ashbrook Center for Public Affairs, Ashland University, Ohio.

Opportunity for YOUR students! Riley Institute!

Furman’s Emerging Public Leaders is a leadership and civic engagement program for high school students sponsored by the Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership. This week-long summer program (June 21 – 26, 2015) offers a series of experiences that enable students to develop into civic minded and engaged leaders in their communities. During the week, participants attend workshops at Furman that prepare them to plan and implement a service project addressing a specific need within their own communities. Students will then return to campus in the spring to present the results of their projects to their peers and a panel of judges. Additional project funds are awarded to the winner.

The program is free of charge to all current juniors who are selected this spring to participate.

The EFL one-week program is rigorous and encompasses 50+ hours of instruction.

The goal of each EFL program is to provide teachers with lesson plans of simulations and activities, economics content instruction, and a networking opportunity with other teaching professionals. The combination of classroom instruction, question and answer sessions, small group discussion and workshops presents information in a rich and varied format, encouraging active participation. Economics professors, who have been selected from across the nation for their expertise, along with skilled mentor teachers, provide content instruction and run simulations and activities that are designed to illustrate economic principles. Both new and experienced teachers will benefit from attending this program.

Attending teachers gain direct experience with the lesson plans before they leave at the end of the week.

More details can be found at the SCCTA website http://www.furman.edu/sccta. As a residential program, this seminar has particular advantages. Participants are housed in apartment-like dorms with fellow teachers. The opportunities for informal discussions and networking are particularly rich. The speakers approach their presentations assuming that although participants may teach about China and Japan, they most likely have had little opportunity for formal detailed instruction in the histories and cultures of these regions. The goal is to build confidence in teaching about these fascinating and significant “major players” in the world current students are inheriting.

No other region of the world looms larger on the U.S. foreign policy agenda than the Middle East. The 2011 Arab uprisings have shaken up the social and political landscape of the region.

Join the Choices Program and scholars from the Watson Institute for International Studies at the 2015 Choices Leadership Institute to examine these complex issues. Scholar presentations will investigate both the recent history of the Middle East and multiple perspectives on current U.S. policy towards the region. Participants will examine instructional strategies for engaging secondary students in the study of contested international issues, share best practices with other dedicated and innovative teachers, and explore plans for conducting effective professional development.

The meeting will be in the Rutledge Conference Center. SEE YOU at the Voting Booths and at the SC Board of Education Meeting. This is critical!

Hello everyone, I wanted to share with you some information about the SCCSS elections-

1. VOTE by the deadline!

2. Middle School Representative- last year, the elected Middle School Representative resigned, and the Board appointed one of the candidates to that position, following the Constitution (Guidelines for the organization) an election is required to fill that position.

3. Why no Treasurer? Sadly, no one self appointed or entered their hat into the ring.
Greetings! Fellow South Carolina Educators-
As we get closer to the end of the school year, I wanted to share several opportunities that are available to you.
First, we have totally redone the SCCSS website

  www.sccss.apricot.org

This was done in efforts to make it more of a teacher tool and place to visit for up to date information about events, Professional Development opportunities. The Council has envisioned a website that Social Studies Educators would visit for information relating to our discipline. Please share your thoughts with me about information you would like to see more of at lesliecarter80@me.com
Do you know about the 2 major battles fought in SC that had a major effect on the success of the American Revolution? We are pleased to announce the first “Teachers in the Field” Experience at Cowpens and Kings Mountain Battlefields. Robert W. Brown, Jr., Expert and published author on the topics will lead us on a knowledgable tour of the sites and participants will receive a copy of his book. You will not want to miss this on May 3, 2014. Registration is now open and this is something you will not want to miss!
Everyday, amazing educational learning occurs in Social Studies classrooms across our state. I am going to challenge you to nominate a fellow teacher, program of study, and or student for an award. I am also going to challenge you to present at our upcoming conference. Was there a topic you thought should have been addressed? Did you walk away and think, “Wow, I could share my activity that relates!” There is amazing leadership in our state and it is time to utilize those skills. If you are interested in running for a position on the board, or helping out in any capacity, please contact me or check the website for updates.
Good luck as we move into testing season. I am right there in the trenches with you. Please accept my challenge and nominate and present!
Thanks for all you do everyday to improve Social Studies education across our state- YOU are making a difference!
Happenings from Leslie Carter

I want to take a moment to thank everyone for their outstanding job aboard the Yorktown at our fall conference. Without the tireless efforts of organizers, exhibitors, presenters, and attendees, it would not have been a success. A special thank you to Garrett Walker and Tracee Simpson who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful conference. In October, Garrett resigned from the role of President in order to spend more time with family and professional obligations. His efforts were greatly appreciated by educators across the state. Thank you Garrett for a great job! Get ready for the 2014 conference in Columbia! Conference information can be found at www.sccss.org.
We are all aware of Common Core and the rigors we face with implementation in our state and districts. Common Core ensures the important of social studies curriculum. Our discipline teaches writing, inquiry, and development of opinion, which is aligned with Common Core. Every day in Social Studies classrooms, students are engaged in the techniques that the Common Core emphasizes. Politics aside, good teaching is good teaching and our students deserve an active curriculum.
I am very excited to share another resource which is poised to reform social studies instruction. The College, Career and Civic Life Framework- otherwise known as C3 was developed by teachers and professors from around the nation. Inquiry is interesting for students and this is the heart of social studies and C3. One of the driving principles of this resource is that social studies is composed of deep and enduring understandings, concepts and skills from the disciplines and those skills are needed for todays society. Please visit this website http://www.socialstudies.org/c3 to download a free copy of C3. I would like for you to let me know your thoughts on C3. Please email me your comments.

I recently attended the National Social Studies Conference in St. Louis where I had the opportunity to hear amazing speakers discuss the future of education. I was reminded of something very powerful by the President of NCSS, Steve Armstrong. He asked the audience to remember the teacher who made a difference in their life. Then he pointed out that as teachers, we are that influential person to a student today. I encourage you to continue to build relationships with students and continue to be that influential person in our students' lives!
Amazing learning opportunities are occurring in classrooms across the state. Please continue to share your opportunities with teachers at SCCSS's conference, the call for proposals will come out in the next couple of months and I hope you apply to present. Again, follow our website for information concerning mini-grants and opportunities for teachers over the summer.
Thank you for all that you do for social studies in our great state!
Sincerely,
Leslie Carter
